Premium Dog & Cat Foods at
The Companion Shop
We only carry foods we believe are healthier for your pet. The market is full of foods that are good quality, but don't be fooled by inferior foods just because they have big advertising budgets. Some of these may be good, but most are not. The following are some tips you can keep in mind when you are looking for a quality food.
1. The first five ingredients make up the bulk of the food. So as an example, if you see something is listed as number 27 in the list, there's not too much of it in there.
2. Try to find a food that has at least two meat ingredients in the first five. Look for specific meat meals, such as lamb meal or chicken meal. These are dried products and don't weigh as much as a listing of just chicken. If the food says it has chicken that's great, but the company is weighing all the water in the meat to get it higher in the ingredient list.
3. Avoid corn, soy, and wheat. Not only are these grains fillers, they are the top three allergens for dogs and cats. While a little bit of any of these would be ok, most lower quality foods use a lot of them, and they are high in the ingredient list. (See #1)
4. Avoid by-products! YUCK
5. Avoid bad preservatives like BHA/BHT & Propylene Glycol. These are harmful to our pets, and are often seen in discount foods and those lovely soft, red, treats in your local grocery stores.
